Chapter 10
Jack
We didn’t need to leave for the countryside until 9 a.m., so I told Tessa she didn’t have to rush to get to my place at her usual time. I thought she’d probably like to sleep in for a change. But that didn’t stop her from arriving at 7. She came in wearing that red sundress she’d shown off the night before and she looked amazing.
I was sitting at the kitchen table drinking my morning coffee, still in the sweatpants I’d slept in. I felt a little self-conscious considering how beautiful she looked. I asked her why she’d chosen to come in so early and she laughed, saying she’d thought I might need some help getting the kids up after the late night and she’d learned a few tricks over the past few weeks. I was happy for the help as I still needed to finish packing my own clothes and getting ready.
I could hear her waking the kids up and it made me smile the way they laughed as she clearly tickled them awake. It had been awhile since I’d heard the sound of my children laughing so early in the morning. To be honest, I hadn’t spent nearly enough time with them lately. I guess it was just easier to deal with work issues than it was to be alone at home with them hoping that they didn’t have any questions that their mother would have been better at answering.
But with Tessa there, it all seemed so much easier. I knew that if I’d had to get them ready, pack my own bags as well as theirs and get them dressed, we probably wouldn’t have left on time. She was a lifesaver and I wanted her to know that.
We all piled into the old cherry-red Jeep I kept in the garage for long-distance driving with the family. As soon as we were leaving the city, Tessa connected her phone to the car’s BlueTooth. “I made a playlist I think we will all be happy with,” she said simply.
“I doubt it,” I muttered.
She made a joke of poking me in the ribs with her elbow. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”
The first song that came on was “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, and the little ones went crazy singing along. It turned out that Tessa had been teaching them the art of singing along very loudly to classic rock songs in the car. I couldn’t help but smile broadly. The playlist was pretty spectacular, given that I was used to playing kids' music on road trips for years.
The drive up was beautiful and there were very few other cars on the open road, which made driving extremely pleasant. We arrived at the house at around noon. The house was huge. I mean, driving to it from the gate took a good twenty minutes. For a holiday home, it was more of a mansion than anything else. The lawns were manicured and the bushes had been clipped to resemble various animals.
